Sunday, April 13, 2025 at 2:30 PM The Music of Holy Week
"The Music of Holy Week"
is a new program based on two well-received previous programs presented two and six years ago. It is a musical celebration of the major events of the seven days from Jesus' entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday through the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. It will take place on the afternoon of Palm Sunday, the week before Easter.
Joining us will be the Choir of the Greenville Baptist Church under the direction of Dianne Du
; organist Donald Dame, accompanied by Bruce Hopkins on trumpet and corno de caccia; soprano Amanda Santo and baritone Glenn Zienowitz, accompanied by
Donald Dame; the Hornithology Ensemble, a French Horn quartet under the direction of Elizabeth Gates; our own marvelous church organist, Marilyn Knight
, and Pastor Ethel Corbin.
The choir throughout the program will present a selection of eight pieces from the Easter Cantata
by Pepper Choplin, a widely acclaimed contemporary American composer of sacred music. Donald Dame, accompanied by Bruce Hopkins, will play passion music from Bach,
Mozart, and Bedard. Our vocalists will sing J.B. Faure's "The Palms," and other famous Holy Week selections, such as "Go to Dark Gethsemane," "Were you There," "Let Us
Break Bread Together," and "He Lives." The horn quartet will play compositions by Bruckner, G. Faure, and Handel. Marilyn Knight
on the church's century-and-a-quarter tracker pipe organ will play while the congregation sings familiar hymns, such as "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Christ the Lord is Risen Today." Pastor Ethel Corbin will read the story of Holy Week from Luke, Mark, and John.
